The Excel sheet rename shortcut is Alt, then H, then O, then R, pressed one key after another. The current sheet's tab becomes editable; type the replacement name, then confirm with Enter. With a mouse, a double click on the tab gives the same result.

Note that F2 does not rename sheets in Excel; it edits the active cell. The older key sequence Alt, then O, then H, then R from earlier menu versions still works in current Excel too.

Naming rules for sheets

What Excel allows
RuleDetail
LengthUp to 31 characters
Not allowed\ / ? * : [ ]
Cannot be blankEvery sheet needs a name
UniqueNo two sheets in a workbook can share a name
ReservedHistory cannot be used

Short names such as Apr, May and Jun, or Sales North, make formulas that refer to other sheets easier to read. Avoid spaces if you write many cross sheet formulas, because Excel then wraps the name in single quotes inside every reference. Names like Sales_North or SalesNorth keep formulas shorter and easier to type, and they sort neatly when you later list the sheets in an index sheet with hyperlinks to each one.

Rename many sheets quickly

Excel renames one sheet at a time. A fast rhythm is Alt, then H, then O, then R, type, Enter, then Ctrl + PgDn to the next sheet and repeat. For a monthly workbook, create the first sheet, name it, then add the others with Shift + F11; see new sheet in Excel. Tab colours, set with Alt, then H, then O, then T, help group sheets such as quarters.

Formulas that refer to a renamed sheet update automatically, so renaming is safe even in linked workbooks that are open.

Rename a sheet on a Mac

Excel for Mac has no default rename key. Double click the tab, or hold Control and click it, then choose Rename. You can add your own shortcut in macOS System Settings, Keyboard, Keyboard Shortcuts, App Shortcuts, using the exact menu title Rename Sheet.
