The quickest tick mark shortcut in Word is to type 2713 and press Alt + X: the code turns into a tick. Use 2714 for a heavier tick and 2611 for a ticked box. This works in any font that has the symbol, such as Segoe UI Symbol.

The older method uses the Wingdings 2 font, where Shift + P types a tick and Shift + O a cross. Outside Word, the symbol panel Win + . has ticks under its symbols tab, and Excel can show ticks with the same codes in a cell.

How to insert tick symbol in Word with a shortcut key

  1. Put the cursor where the tick should go.
  2. Type 2713. Do not add a space after it.
  3. Press Alt + X. The four characters become a tick.
  4. Copy it with Ctrl + C if you need it in many places.

If the result is an empty box, change the font to Segoe UI Symbol or Arial Unicode MS.

Make your own tick shortcut

For forms you fill daily, add an AutoCorrect entry. Insert a tick once, select it, open Insert, Symbol, More Symbols, AutoCorrect, and type a code such as tick1 in the Replace box. From then on, typing tick1 and a space inserts a tick. In the same Symbol window, Shortcut Key lets you assign a real key such as Alt + T.

For clickable check boxes in a Word form, use the Developer tab and insert a Check Box Content Control instead of a typed tick.

Ticks in Excel and other apps

In Excel, type a tick with Win + . or copy one from Word; formulas can also produce it with =UNICHAR(10003). The tick mark in Excel guide shows conditional ticks for status columns. In email and chat, the Win + . symbol panel inserts ticks and crosses directly. Sticky Notes, the Windows note app, opens from Start search; inside it Ctrl + N creates a new note where you can paste ticks for a to do list.
