The volume shortcut key on most laptops is one of the function keys marked with a speaker icon: one for volume up, one for down and one for mute. Depending on the laptop, press it alone or together with Fn. A small volume bar appears on screen to confirm the change.

Without media keys, open quick settings with Win + A, move to the volume slider with Tab and use the arrow keys. In Windows 11, Win + Ctrl + V opens the sound output list so you can switch between speakers and headphones.

Volume up shortcut key with or without Fn

Laptops have a setting called Fn Lock or Action Keys mode. With it set to media keys, the speaker keys work alone and you press Fn to get F1 to F12. With it off, it is the reverse. Many laptops toggle it with Fn + Esc, and some set it in the BIOS. If you use F keys a lot in Excel or accounting software, choose function keys first and press Fn for volume. More on this is in function keys F1 to F12.

Hold the volume key down to change volume quickly instead of tapping it many times.

Volume from the keyboard without media keys

  1. Open quick settings with Win + A.
  2. Press Tab until the volume slider is selected.
  3. Use the left and right arrow keys to change the level.
  4. Press Esc to close the panel.

For per app volume, such as keeping music quiet while a video call stays loud, open the Volume mixer from the sound icon or in Settings, System, Sound. Win + Ctrl + V in Windows 11 also lists output devices and app volumes.

Volume shortcuts on a Mac

F12 raises volume, F11 lowers it and F10 mutes. Hold Option + Shift while pressing the volume keys to change in quarter steps for finer control. Holding Option and pressing a volume key opens Sound settings. Each press makes a small click sound unless you turn off Play feedback when volume is changed.
