These google sheet shortcut keys are checked against Google's own shortcut list for Windows. The most useful starting point is Ctrl + /, which shows every shortcut inside Sheets itself. After that, Ctrl + Shift + V pastes values only, Ctrl + Alt + M adds a comment, and Ctrl + Alt + = inserts rows or columns when they are selected.

Many Excel keys work in Sheets too, but some differ. For example, Ctrl + Shift + L aligns text left in Sheets rather than adding a filter. Mac users swap Ctrl for Command throughout.

Shortcut for filter in Google Sheets

Google's list has no single key to create a filter. Use Data, then Create a filter, or the filter icon in the toolbar. Once a filter exists, select a header cell and press Ctrl + Alt + R to open its drop down menu. Many websites suggest Ctrl + Shift + L, but in Google Sheets that key aligns text to the left. Excel filter keys are covered separately in Excel filter shortcut.

A small business owner tracks orders in Google Sheets on her laptop. She pastes figures from emails with Ctrl + Shift + V so they keep the sheet's format, and inserts new rows with Ctrl + Alt + = as orders arrive.

Sheets on phones and tablets

Keyboard shortcuts work in Google Sheets in a computer browser. On phones and tablets, most of them only work if a physical keyboard is connected. Phone users rely on long press menus instead: long press a cell to copy, paste or insert rows. Editing large sheets is much faster on a laptop for this reason, so plan heavy data entry for a computer where these keys work.
