Mac Finder

CommandShiftN

The new folder shortcut key in Windows is Ctrl + Shift + N. Inside any File Explorer window, or straight on the desktop, it creates a folder called New folder with the name already selected, so you can type the real name straight away and press Enter.

Both current Windows versions share it, and Mac Finder uses Command + Shift + N. In a browser the same keys open a private window instead, so click inside File Explorer first.

Quick facts

  • New folder

    Ctrl + Shift + N

How to use the new folder shortcut key

  1. Open File Explorer with Win + E and go to the place for the new folder.
  2. Click once on an empty area of the folder so no file is selected.
  3. Press Ctrl + Shift + N. A folder appears with its name highlighted.
  4. Type the name, for example Bills March, and press Enter.

If you pressed Enter too soon and it is still called New folder, select it and use the rename shortcut key, F2.

Shortcut key to create new folder on the desktop

Bring the desktop forward with Win + D, click a bare spot, and press Ctrl + Shift + N. The folder appears where there is free space. On a crowded desktop it may land at the end of the icon list, so look for the highlighted name.

Keep the desktop tidy with one Work folder and subfolders inside it. Desktop clutter slows down finding files more than it slows the computer.

Make a folder for every month quickly

Create the first folder, name it, then press Ctrl + Shift + N again: each new folder is ready to name. Starting names with numbers, such as 01 January and 02 February, keeps them in calendar order when sorted by name. Short, clear names also make the search box in File Explorer far more useful later, because you can type a month or supplier and see the right folder at once. For moving files into them, see the move a file guide.
