The quickest shutdown shortcut key on Windows is Alt + F4 pressed on the desktop: a small Shut Down Windows box opens with Shut down already selected, so you just press Enter. If a program is open, press Win + D first to show the desktop, otherwise Alt + F4 will close that program instead.
There are three more keyboard ways to turn a laptop or computer off, each useful when the mouse or touchpad is not working. All of them are below, along with what to do when the laptop will not switch off.

Shutdown shortcut key methods compared
| Method | Keys | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop shut down box | Win + D, then Alt + F4, then Enter | Everything is working normally |
| Power user menu | Win + X, then U, then U | You want restart or sleep too (R or S) |
| Secure screen | Ctrl + Alt + Delete, then Tab to the power icon | A program has frozen |
| Run command | Win + R, type shutdown /s /t 0, Enter | You want it instant with no menu |
Shut down with Alt + F4, step by step
- Save your open files.
- Press Win + D so the desktop is in front.
- Press Alt + F4. The Shut Down Windows box appears.
- Check that the list says Shut down. If not, press the arrow keys to choose it.
- Press Enter. Windows closes programs and turns off.
On many laptops F4 also controls the microphone or screen. If Alt + F4 changes a setting instead of opening the box, use Fn + Alt + F4. This is the usual answer for a laptop shutdown shortcut key that seems not to work.
Using Win + X as a computer shutdown shortcut key
Win + X opens the power user menu in the corner of the screen. Press U to open the "Shut down or sign out" list, then press a second letter:
- U to shut down
- R to restart (see the restart shortcut key guide)
- S to sleep
- I to sign out
This works the same on Windows 10 and Windows 11, and it does not matter which window is open.
When the laptop is frozen
If the screen does not respond, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. This screen almost always opens, even when a program has hung. Press Tab until the power icon in the bottom right corner is selected, press Enter, then choose Shut down. You can also open Task Manager from here to close the stuck program first.
Only if nothing responds at all should you hold the physical power button for about ten seconds. That forces the computer off and any unsaved work is lost.
One key shutdown with a desktop shortcut
You can make your own windows shutdown shortcut. Right click the desktop, choose New, then Shortcut, and type shutdown /s /t 0 as the location. Name it Shut down. Then open its Properties and click in the Shortcut key box and press a combination such as Ctrl + Alt + S. From then on that combination turns the computer off at once.
When the shutdown keys do not work
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Alt + F4 closes a program | Press Win + D first so the desktop is active |
| Alt + F4 mutes the mic or changes brightness | Add Fn, or turn Fn lock off |
| Laptop restarts instead of shutting down | Install pending updates, or turn off fast startup in Power Options |
| Updates are installing | Let them finish; Update and shut down takes longer |
Shutdown keys on a Mac
On a Mac, Control + Option + Command + Power quits apps and shuts down. Control + Power shows a dialog to choose restart, sleep or shut down. The full list is in the Mac shutdown and sleep shortcuts guide. For other everyday keys on Windows, see the Windows shortcut keys hub.
