The sleep shortcut key in Windows is a short sequence: press Win + X, then U, then S. The screen turns off, the computer drops to very low power, and your open work is kept in memory until you wake it.

Sleep mode is ideal for short breaks such as lunch or travel between classes. Waking takes only a few seconds, and everything is exactly as you left it. Below you will find the other ways in, including the laptop lid and keyboards with a moon key.

Quick facts

  • Sleep

    Win + X, then U, then S
  • Shut Down box

Alt + F4 on the desktop, choose Sleep
  • Moon key

Some keyboards have one; may need Fn
  • Laptop lid

    Closing it sleeps by default
  • Wake

Any key or the power button
  • Mac

    Option + Command + Power

Shortcut key for sleep mode, step by step

  1. Save anything important. Sleep keeps work in memory, but a dead battery loses it.
  2. Press Win + X to open the power user menu.
  3. Press U to open the list of power options.
  4. Press S. The computer goes to sleep within a second or two.

If Sleep is missing from the list, the computer's power settings or graphics driver may have hidden it. See the fixes below.

Sleep shortcut key in Windows 11 laptops

Windows 11 keeps the same Win + X sequence. Many newer laptops use Modern Standby, which keeps some network activity going while asleep so mail and messages are ready when you open the lid. If your bag gets warm, choose Hibernate or Shut down for long trips instead of sleep.

Make the power button or lid sleep

Open the old Control Panel with Win + R, type powercfg.cpl and press Enter. Click Choose what the power buttons do. Set the power button, sleep button and lid to Sleep, Hibernate or Shut down for battery and for plugged in. This gives you a one press sleep shortcut for laptop use without any key combination.

Hibernate saves your work to the disk and uses no power at all, so it survives a flat battery. It also appears in this screen if your computer supports it.

When sleep does not work

Problems and fixes
ProblemFix
Sleep option missingUpdate the graphics driver; some basic drivers hide sleep
Wakes up by itselfA mouse or network card is allowed to wake it; change that in Device Manager
Screen off but fans runningThat may be the screen timeout, not sleep; check power settings
Does not wakePress the power button briefly; if stuck, hold it to force a restart
A college student pauses an assignment between lectures with Win + X, U, S. In the next class she opens the laptop and the half written document is still on screen, cursor and all.

Sleep on a Mac

On a Mac, Option + Command + Power sleeps at once, and closing the lid does the same. Control + Shift + Power turns off only the screen. See the Mac shutdown and sleep guide. Turning the machine fully off or rebooting is explained in the shutdown and restart guides, and locking without sleep is covered in the lock screen shortcut key guide.
