The quickest calculator shortcut key on Windows is Win + R: type calc in the Run box and press Enter. Calculator opens in under a second. Pressing Win alone and typing calc works the same way through the Start menu.

Windows has no built in single key for Calculator, but many keyboards include a Calculator key above the number pad, and you can create your own key combination in two minutes, as shown below.

Make a one key calculator shortcut

  1. Press Win, type calculator, and right click it. Choose Pin to Start or Pin to taskbar.
  2. For a key combination, make a desktop shortcut whose location is calc.exe and call it Calculator.
  3. In that shortcut's Properties, put the cursor in the Shortcut key field and hit Ctrl + Alt + C, or any free combination.
  4. Click OK. That combination now opens Calculator from anywhere.

Pinned taskbar apps also open with Win and their position number: if Calculator is third on the taskbar, Win + 3 opens it. Pressing the same combination again switches back to it if it is already open.

Calculator keeps a history of your sums. Click any earlier result to reuse it, which saves retyping long numbers. Programmer mode converts between decimal and binary, and the date calculation mode counts days between two dates, useful for notice periods and loan terms.

Calculator shortcut key in laptop keyboards

Laptops rarely have a Calculator key, and many have no number pad either. The Win + R method or a pinned taskbar icon is the fastest choice. Accountants often use the calculator panel built into their accounting software instead, opened with Ctrl + N; see our accounting calculator page.

A shopkeeper at a billing counter checks a discount quickly: Win + R, calc, Enter, types the amount and percentage, and closes it with Alt + F4 before the customer finishes packing.

Calculator on a Mac

Press Command + Space, type calculator and press Return. The Mac search box also does simple sums directly: type 1250*18% in the search box to see the answer without opening anything. Other Windows quick launch keys are in Run command shortcut and the Windows shortcut keys page.
