The select column shortcut excel offers is Ctrl + Space: click any cell in the column and press it to select the whole column from top to bottom. Shift + Space does the same for the row. Together they are the first step for inserting, deleting, hiding or formatting whole columns and rows.
To select only the filled part of a column instead of all million rows, use Ctrl + Shift + Down from the first cell. Extend it sideways or downward by adding Shift to the arrow keys.

Shortcut to select entire column in Excel, step by step
- Click any cell in the column, for example C5.
- Press Ctrl + Space. Column C is highlighted from row 1 to the bottom of the sheet.
- To add columns D and E, press Shift + Right twice.
- Now apply an action: Ctrl + Minus to delete, Ctrl + 0 to hide, or a format.
Rows work the same way: Shift + Space, then Shift + Down for more rows. Selecting whole columns before formatting is better than selecting a fixed range, because new rows added later at the bottom pick up the same format automatically.
Select a column inside a table
In a formatted Excel table, the first Ctrl + Space selects just the data in that table column. Press it again to include the header, and a third time for the whole sheet column. This lets you format or copy a table column without touching cells below it. The filter and sort keys work on the same tables.
Select visible cells only
After filtering or hiding rows, a normal selection still includes the hidden cells, and copying brings them along, which surprises many people when the pasted list is longer than what they saw. Select the range, press Alt + ;, then copy: only the visible rows are copied. The same trick makes it safe to delete only filtered rows, as explained in delete row shortcut.
When selection keys do not work
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Ctrl + Space changes language | Change the Windows input hot key, or click the column header |
| Ctrl + Shift + Down stops early | There is a blank cell; press it again to continue |
| Selection jumps to row 1048576 | The column is empty below; use Ctrl + Shift + Up to come back |
| Shift + Space types a space | You are editing a cell; press Esc first |
