The insert column shortcut excel provides is Ctrl + Space to select the column, followed by Ctrl + Plus. A blank column appears to the left of the selected one, and everything to the right moves over by one.
With only a cell selected, Ctrl + Plus asks what to insert; press C for entire column and Enter. To add three columns, select three before pressing the keys.

Insert column shortcut excel steps
- Click a cell in the column that should move to the right.
- Press Ctrl + Space. The whole column is selected.
- Press Ctrl + Plus, the key with = on it, or the plus on the number pad.
- A new empty column appears on the left.
If Ctrl + Space switches your keyboard language instead, Windows has that hot key set; click the column letter with the mouse or use the ribbon keys.
All the ways to add a column
| Situation | Keys |
|---|---|
| Column selected | Ctrl + Plus |
| Only a cell selected | Ctrl + Plus, then C, then Enter |
| Ribbon sequence | Alt, then H, then I, then C |
| Repeat elsewhere | F4 |
| Add a column to a table | Type in the column just right of the table |
Add several columns at once
Select as many columns as you need to add: Ctrl + Space, then Shift + Right for each extra one. Ctrl + Plus inserts that many blank columns to the left. This keeps formatting tidy because the new columns copy the format of the column on their left.
Formulas after inserting columns
References inside existing formulas move along with the data, so =SUM(B2:D2) becomes =SUM(B2:E2) if you insert inside that range. Inserting just outside the range does not extend it, so check row totals after adding a column at the edge. Tables avoid this problem; see AutoSum for checking totals.
When insert column fails
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Cannot shift nonblank cells | The last column, XFD, has data; clear it |
| A row was inserted instead | You selected a row; press Ctrl + Z and use Ctrl + Space |
| Ctrl + Space changes language | Change the Windows input hot key, or use Alt, H, I, C |
| Insert greyed out | Sheet protected or several sheets grouped |
Insert copied columns without overwriting
To move a column of data into the middle of a sheet without replacing anything, copy it with Ctrl + C (or cut with Ctrl + X), select the column where it should go, and press Ctrl + Plus. Excel inserts the copied cells and pushes the existing columns to the right, instead of pasting over them. This is the cleanest way to reorder columns, for example moving a Phone column next to Name in a customer list, and it keeps every formula pointing to the right data.
