The credit note shortcut key in Tally depends on your version. In TallyPrime it is Alt + F6, and the debit note is Alt + F5. In the older Tally ERP 9 the credit note was Ctrl + F8 and the debit note Ctrl + F9.
This change is the most common reason a shortcut from an old notebook does not work. In TallyPrime, Ctrl + F8 and Ctrl + F9 now open Sales Order and Purchase Order instead. The TallyPrime keys here come from Tally's own shortcut list.

When to use a credit note or a debit note
| Situation | Note |
|---|---|
| Customer returns goods you sold | Credit Note |
| You give a customer a discount after billing | Credit Note |
| You return goods to a supplier | Debit Note |
| Supplier overcharged and agrees to reduce | Debit Note |
A credit note reduces what a customer owes you; a debit note reduces what you owe a supplier. Your accountant may follow a different convention for some adjustments, so confirm with them for unusual cases.
How to enter a credit note in TallyPrime
- Press Alt + F6. The Credit Note voucher opens.
- Press F2 if the date needs changing.
- Select the customer ledger and the sales return or discount ledger.
