Tally shortcut keys F1 to F12 open the most used screens, and six of them start vouchers: Contra on F4, Payment on F5, Receipt on F6, Journal on F7, Sales on F8 and Purchase on F9. F2 changes the voucher date, F11 opens company features and F12 opens configuration.
Adding Alt or Ctrl to a function key opens related vouchers, such as Ctrl + F8 for a Sales Order in TallyPrime. A few keys differ between TallyPrime and the older Tally ERP 9, shown side by side below.

Tally ERP 9 function keys
| Keys | Tally ERP 9 |
|---|---|
| F1 | Select company (from Gateway) |
| F3 | Pick a loaded company |
| F10 | Reversing Journal |

The biggest trap when moving to TallyPrime is the note vouchers: ERP 9 put Credit Note on Ctrl + F8 and Debit Note on Ctrl + F9, while TallyPrime uses Alt + F6 and Alt + F5 and gives Ctrl + F8 and Ctrl + F9 to orders. More on this is in credit and debit note shortcut.
Laptops and Fn keys
On many laptops the F keys control brightness and volume first. Press Fn with the key, such as Fn + F8 for Sales, or turn on Fn Lock so the function keys act normally. Accountants entering hundreds of vouchers a day often switch Fn Lock on permanently in the laptop's BIOS or utility software. For how these keys behave on laptops in general, read function keys F1 to F12. A cheap external keyboard with a full function row is another fix that many busy accounts desks use.
When a function key does nothing
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Key changes volume | Use Fn with it, or turn on Fn Lock |
| Voucher type not available | Enable it in F11 features, such as orders or payroll |
| Key works in Gateway only | Some keys are screen specific; check the right side button bar |
